Summer wedding celebrations

Create the hottest summer wedding around (without breaking the bank!)

The weather is warm, the guests already in a festive mood…a summer wedding requires very little extra effort for a wonderful time had by all. You just need to pay attention to the small details.

Lots of couples pick the summer season for their wedding because of the warm weather. After all, when it’s hot and sunny, everything just seems a little bit better. So keep your guests in high, happy spirits with these easy, inexpensive and seasonal ideas that will make your wedding the hottest event of the season. After all, at a wedding it’s the small things, from the look the groom gives the bride to the tears at the father-daughter dance, that matter the most.

  1. Summer Survival Kit. It goes without saying that most summer weddings, especially in the UK, are either too warm or too wet. Keep your guests comfortable with a fully stocked survival kit for any Sod’s Law moment, from achy, sweaty dancing feet (baby powder) to red wine stains (soda water or a stain kit) incurred on the dance floor. Also keep in mind bug repellent, if you are doing any outdoor activities.

  2. Salad shots. Summer weddings have a tendency to go long and get slightly messy at the end, so at least start your guests off on a healthy note. The colourful rainbow of mini appetisers – melons, tomatoes, cucumbers – is great for photos as well. It’s best if you can source your appetisers locally, and the best part is, they need very little – perhaps a dash of salt or a little dip – to look delicious and hit the spot for hungry guests right after the ceremony.

  3. Edible table cards. If you have table placements for your reception, why not stick names in a mini-punnet of berries? Not only are these the perfect snack for peckish guests throughout the night, they add a splash of summer to even the most formal of weddings.

  4. Sing along. Its already been mentioned how long summer nights can be, and weddings may go on longer than usual, especially if your reception is outdoor and the weather is warm. Break up your entertainment by asking your band to include a few well known songs most of your guests would know. ‘Get Lucky’ anyone? How about ‘We are Family’ instead ;D

  5. Marquee signs. If you’ve ever wanted to see your name in lights, now is your chance. Fill cardboard letters with a string of Christmas lights to get your names up at the reception. Its especially nice to place your names behind the wedding band so people can celebrate you as they take a turn on the dance floor throughout the night.

  6. Paper fans. There’s no finer attention to detail than supplying your guests with paper fans if your venue is really hot, or you’re outdoors on an especially warm day. (They also come in handy for those who like to cut a rug to some serious wedding tunes.) Paper fans can be purchased really inexpensively, or you can make them as a fun bridal shower activity.

  7. Line dancing. It may sound silly, but there’s no better way to keep the festive spirit going than by asking the band to break out a song that everyone knows the dance to, such as the Chicken Dance, Macarena or Electric Slide. It gets everyone moving and grooving, even the wallflowers you were worried might not take advantage of all the reception has to offer.

Summer weddings, when done right, can be the talk of the town long after the event. These few tips should help you get the event started right – and keep it going long into the warm summer nights.
